UHPO Events/Announcements 

  • December DEAP Information Session. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, 1:30 pm, Multipurpose Room, BSE 2.102-1.  All students interested in DEAP should first attend an information session before scheduling an appointment with a UHPO advisor.  Information sessions are held once a month.

  • The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM): is pleased to announce a series of Fall 2009 multi-COM recruitment events across the country where interested pre-medical students and prospective applicants will have a tremendous opportunity to meet one-on-one with many medical school admission officers.   • The University of Texas Southwest Medical Center at Dallas - Premedical, Pre-Health & Biomedical Sciences Annual Conference: November 14, 2009, UT Southwestern's Lula B. Gooch Auditorium (South Campus). The Office of Minority Student Affairs at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is pleased to invite students interested in medical or science careers to the combined 27th Annual Premedical Conference.  The conference will focus on minority college students preparing for careers in medicine or science. This conference will involve UT Southwestern Medical Center faculty and students, UT Southwestern alumni and local Dallas physicians. There is no fee for this conference, lunch will be provided, and dress is “business casual”. Interested students must fill out a registration form designating which track they are interested in attending and submit it no later than Monday November 2, 2009.   • Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine Pre-Professional Internship Program: The Pre-Professional Internship Program at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM) is designed to provide insight into the many facets of podiatric medicine and the education involved with obtaining the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree. The internship offers a one or two week experience in the months of January, June and July. Student interns rotate through the following departments in the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic: General Medicine, Podiatric Medicine, Orthopedics/Biomechanics, and Podiatric Surgery. Interns may also observe podiatrists at the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. A typical day includes open clinic observations and department rotations with OCPM students and faculty clinicians. Interns will also participate in workshops on admissions, financial aid, student activities and the first-year experience as well as social events in the Cleveland area.   • The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO): ASCO is pleased to announce the Schools and Colleges of Optometry Admission Requirements 2009-2010 handbook is now available online. This is a wonderful resource for prospective students, applicants, and others interested in more information about the profession of optometry.  Please view the following link for more information: http://www.opted.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3446.  

  • Attention 2010 AACOMAS Applicants!: Previous 2009 AACOMAS applicants who are re-applying, will be able to use the “roll-over” feature, but must first “enable” pop-ups on the computer. Remember to check the “YES” box on the 2010 AACOMAS application to authorize release of your data to the Pre-Health Advisors at UTSA.  Please view the following PDF, here. It shows screen shots of the 2010 AACOMAS application. The newest features for applicants are highlighted.   

  • The American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS): The 2010 AMCAS application will open on or about Tuesday, May 5th and submission will begin on or about Tuesday, June 2nd. Applicants can begin submitting transcripts and letter information once they initiate a 2010 application. Letters will need to be received with the Letter Request Form if mailed or the Letter ID found on the Letter Request Form if electronic.  An abundance of resources for the 2010 application including FAQ's, participating Letters and Criminal Background Check schools can be found by following this link: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/amcas2010.htm.

  • The Associated American Dental Schools Application Services (AADSAS):  The AADSAS 2010 cycle will launch on June 1, 2009. Applicants to AADSAS 2009 who plan to re-apply in 2010 are reminded to print a copy of their 2009 applications. After May 29, 2009 the 2009 AADSAS application will no longer be accessible to applicants. The fee for AADSAS 2010 will be $217 for the initial designation and $68 for each additional designation. For more information please visit the following website: http://www.adea.org/dental_education_pathways/aadsas/Pages/AADSASApplicants.aspx.

  • The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) Centralized Application Service: Available on July 15, 2009. The ASCO is pleased to announce the launching of the centralized application service for optometry (OptomCAS) for the 2009-2010 application cycle. OptomCAS will offer applicants a convenient, web-based application that will allow them to apply to more than one participating optometry school or college with one application.  ALL twenty schools and colleges of optometry will participate.   • APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) Update: The APTA has announced the 2008-2009 Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) application is available online.  The application and additional information can be viewed at the PTCAS website: http://www.ptcas.org .

  • Drexel University College of Medicine:  Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Professional Education Programs in Interdepartmental Medical Science (IMS), Medical Science Preparatory (MSP) and Drexel Pathway to Medical School (DPMS).  For more information on these programs or to download the application please go to:  http://www.drexelmed.edu/ims.

  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s (UTHSCSA) Bachelor of Science degree program in Respiratory Care: Many students interested in a high technology health care career choose a degree in respiratory care.  UTHSCSA is proud to be among the top programs in the country, and their graduates enjoy 100% job placement upon completion of the two-year program.   • Spring 2009 Groups Advertising. Find out about services offered by UTSA groups.

  • WRC 1023 Spring 2010 - Paula Tran will be teaching WRC 1023 during the spring semester. 1023.068 TR 8-9:15 a.m; 1023.078 TR 9:30-10:45 a.m; 1023.092 TR 12:30-1:45 p.m; 1023.095 TR 2-3:15 p.m.                                  This course will benefit all students entering the health professions. Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Health and Society, is the text being used for the course. It covers the controversy on every health related issue from breast feeding to national health insurance. Written projects for the course include a persuasive brochure (which encourages young people to practice safe sex, be vaccinated for the H1N1 flu virus, etc.)  This project will be used as the basis for the required oral presentation. In addition, students have to write a persuasive essay based on an interview with one of the professors in the Allied Health department. To view the syllabus for the course, please click here.
