Benefits to Honors College Members
-
Advising and Priority Registration
The Honors college staff provides academic counseling for all Honors students, and all members of the Honors College
register with seniors on the first day of the enrollment period, regardless of grade level.
All students accepted and in good standing within the Honors College
are automatically considered for any special awards and scholarships through
the Honors College. Each year, 80 students are awarded a $1,500
Presidential Honors Scholarship. Additionally, 40-50 other students
receive awards/scholarships worth $250 - $2,500.
-
Undergraduate Research Programs
The Honors College staff assists students in finding research assistantships and encourages students
to complete an honors thesis. To help with this process, the Honors College provides grants for financial assistance for research and for travel
to professional conferences.
Honors courses are taught by prominent faculty -- identified
by students and colleagues as outstanding teachers and scholars. Many
have been recipients of university or state-wide teaching awards.
-
Study Abroad Opportunities
The Honors College encourages participation in a Study Abroad program so that honors students acquire an understanding of the people, events, ideas,
and objects of cultures other than their own. Scholarships for studying abroad are available through the International
Education fund. Honors College students may graduate with the designation "International Distinction" by participating
in a study abroad program or by exhibiting mastery of a foreign language at the 2023 level.
Honors College students are encouraged to work in their fields prior to graduation. One method is through an intership
with a professional organization that relates to the student's major. As encouragement, many interships are accepted as credit
toward the student's degree.
-
Preparation for National Scholarships and Fellowship Competitions
Honors College staff assist students in identifying and applying for national scholarships and
fellowships, including the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, the National Science Fellowship, the Rhodes,
Marshall, and Gates-Cambridge Scholarship, the National Hispanic Scholarship, and many others.
All Honors College students are invited to reside in the honors section of campus housing. Students will enjoy
the new suite-style living of Chaparral Village while building lasting friendships with other Honors College
students.
