Message from Barbara Centeno - HR AVP

"Wednesday, July 4th, Independence Day,... the day we celebrate our country's freedom.  We have an opportunity once again to reflect on this freedom and our historical struggle to achieve it.  We should take time to remember our soldiers, their families and the countless others who have made sacrifices for us and our country.  However you choose to celebrate this year, take a few minutes to show appreciation and give thanks for our freedom. Be safe and have an enjoyable holiday!"

Training and Development

Wednesday, April 25th was the national day set aside to celebrate
the contributions of our Administrative Professionals

In honor of the talented support professionals here at UTSA, Training and Development hosted an afternoon "Tea at the Heights" for the graduates of the Administrative Support Toolbox Series. The Administrative Support Toolbox Series is designed to assist the UTSA administrative professionals to complete their many departmental duties with an institutional level awareness in the financial, student/academic, communication and human resource processing areas.

We entertained 26 people who enjoyed typical British Tea fare and listened to Maxine Farrimond, the guest speaker.  Forty-five individuals, from all departments, have completed the series through out the years and were invited to attend the tea. Guests included Terry Allison, Silvia Barta, Canda Brown, Vivian Coleman, Victoria Cruz, Martha Gomez-Gonzalez, Caron Kiley, Cary Kopecky, Rosalinda Luera, Martha Luna, Charity Meier, Judy Olivarez, Maria Ramos, Elizabeth Raymond, Diana Rivas, Jennifer Snellgrove, Rosalinda Stead, Blanch Torres, Melissa Trevino and Cheri Wiese.

The Administrative Support Toolbox series begins again in July so look for more information in the Training and Development newsletter or online at http://www.utsa.edu/hr/Training/index.cfm"

Summer Needs Assessment

This summer Training and Development will be conducting a needs assessment to determine the training needs of the University. We will be sending a survey through the UTSA news which is distributed to all employees. The survey will ask your opinion about the training needs of yourself, your peers, your subordinates and your supervisors. It will be structured to allow you to think about the needs across a broad spectrum of skill areas including computer training, administrative training and development of interpersonal and supervisory skills. It will be anonymous. In addition, we have held 2 Focus Groups in the past month and expect to hold a few more. We appreciate your participation in this effort. The results, combined with other key indicators, allow us to apply our resources to develop classes in the highest need subjects. Please call us if you have suggestions or would like to participate in a Focus Group.

NEW Time Entry System

Senior management has approved the implementation of a University wide electronic Time Entry System. The system will standardize and significantly reduce the administrative costs associated with maintaining time and attendance and will be implemented in a phased approach across the University.

Phase I will involve the non-exempt employees and is tentatively scheduled to start in August or September of 07. Facilities and the University Center will be the pilot group and lead the implementation followed by the Library and the UTSA Police. After those groups have been successfully implemented, we began a systematic roll out to the entire University. The exact units will be determined later.

Phase II will involve the exempt employees (classified and A&P). The implementation schedule for this group has not yet been determined.
