THE PAUL & DAISY SOROS FELLOWSHIP FOR NEW AMERICANS

MJ SIMONSON MEMORIAL PRE-LAW SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by Dr. Ken Weiher, September 1989 in memory of UTSA alumna MJ Simonson, BA History ‘79. M.J. Simonson was my former pre-law student, as well as the close friend of Dr. Weiher. In the past, our students have won this important scholarship. Make sure and read the Simonson pre-law scholarship soon, and assess your chances of winning. Look carefully at and take as important the criteria of preference for this award. THE UTSA LEGISLATIVE SCHOLARS PROGRAM (MCCLENDON)

The UTSA Legislative Scholars Program, created in September 2004, is a collaborative initiative between Texas State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon and The University of Texas at San Antonio. Coordinated by the UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs, the program provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to serve as interns in the Texas House of Representatives during regular legislative sessions. The UTSA Legislative Scholars will receive a stipend of $10,000 ($2,000 per month for five months, January through May) and will be responsible for their own housing, transportation, and other expenses during their stay in Austin.

MEXICAN AMERICAN LEGAL DEFENSE EDUCATION FUND SCHOLARSHIP

The sponsor's Law School Scholarship Program each year awards scholarships to qualified Latino individuals in their first, second or third year of law school.  Students must be enrolled in law school full-time to qualify.

The successful candidate will be well organized, professional, have excellent writing skills, and be proficient in general computer applications.  He or she should be highly dependable, detail oriented, and punctual.  Bilingual in Spanish & English is a plus.  He is seeking an individual to perform general office duties 20-30 a week at 307 S. Santa Rosa Suite 100.

SENATOR LUNA LEGISLATIVE SCHOLARS AND FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain experience and develop leadership skills as full-time legislative assistants in the Texas Senate.  Students will learn how the Texas Legislature operates and policies are created while working side by side experienced professionals. 

Each student is assigned to the office of a state senator or the Lieutenant Governor to perform a variety of legislative tasks, including drafting legislation, writing floor statements, articles, press releases, legislative research summaries, and hearing agendas.   Weekly leadership development sessions and presentations, professional training workshops, and meeting will enhance the intensive work experience.

The application deadline for this program is Friday, October 13, 2006. 

The program will begin January 3, 2007 and end on the last day of the legislative session, May 31, 2007.   Program participants will receive a $2,000 monthly stipend to assist with living expenses.
