San Antonio Mentoring Forum Scholarship

Supporting Higher Education Through Mentoring

The SAMF scholarship is designed to provide access to higher education for seniors who have benefited from a structured mentoring program during their academic career. This scholarship program will connect the scholarship recipient to UTSA’s successful ACE program. The ACE program promotes academic success through a variety of programs including learning communities, tutoring and individual advising.

Applications and all supporting documentation must be postmarked on or before Friday, December 19, 2008 to:

Scholarship Requirements

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 high school Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale) and be accepted to UTSA;
  • Applicant must reside in Bexar County and attend a Bexar County school;
  • Applicant must have been mentored for at least two years (in a structured mentoring program) or been a mentor for at least one year (in a structured mentoring program);
  • Applicant must have an attendance record of at least 80% during senior year;
  • Applicant must show financial need [information will be gathered from application and from student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application form];
  • Applicant must submit a FAFSA ( http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) prior to December 1, 2008, UTSA’s FAFSA Federal School Code: 010115);
  • Applicant must submit an official high school transcript (which must include class rank and courses/grades);
  • Applicant must submit (2) Letters of Recommendation (each letter must be submitted with the application and be in a sealed envelope);
  • One Letter of Recommendation must come from a school counselor/teacher
  • One Letter of Recommendation must come from the student’s mentor
  • Applicant must complete two of the three listed essays included in the Scholarship Application (essays must be handwritten)
  • Applicant must submit a completed application and all supporting documentation postmarked on or before December 19, 2008.

Scholarship Award

The San Antonio Mentor Forum Scholarship will award up to two $2,500 scholarships to The University of Texas at San Antonio for up to two Bexar County students for the 2008-2009 academic year. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 overall GPA with a minimum of twelve hours of coursework during the academic semesters at UTSA in order to continue to receive the scholarship award. Scholarship awards will be submitted directly to UTSA to be disbursed in even increments for (4) subsequent semesters of enrollment following the award notice.

Scholarship Application

The San Antonio Mentor Forum Scholarship recipients will be required to take a minimum of (12) college course hours at The University of Texas at San Antonio for each long-term academic semester. Courses should include core curriculum courses as chosen by the ACE Program staff/advisor and may include a developmental course, depending on THEA assessment results. In addition, SAMF Scholarship recipients will also be enrolled in the College Success Seminar, a study skills instruction course, which is designed to help students enhance their study skills and promote their success at UTSA.
