UTSA Laptop Encryption Program
UTSA President Ricardo Romo has issued a mandate that affects every campus laptop user: all university-owned laptops will be encrypted. This mandate is in response to UT System Security Practice Bulletin #1 (PDF).
What is encryption and what application will be used?
Data Encryption is a process that makes the information on a personal computer or other device unreadable. Encryption makes a personal computer unusable to anyone other than the owner of the password.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will use two encryption applications to encrypt UTSA laptops: SafeBoot and TrueCrypt.
Which laptop PCs will be encrypted?
In the first phase of the project, Windows-based PCs running Windows XP/2000 will be encrypted. Mac laptops will be addressed in a separate phase of this project.
When will my UTSA laptop be encrypted?
OIT will be meeting with all university departments to determine when their encryption process will begin. Please view the Encryption Schedule and Process page to view the current schedule and to learn about what will happen during the encryption process.
How will the encryption process work?
Visit the Encryption Schedule and Process page for a detailed description of the Laptop Encryption Program process. More information about the software used.
