Slow Computer?
There could be several reasons why your machine is running slowly. Below are a few common examples and what you can do for each situation. If you have any questions or would like help, please contact OITConnect.
Computer Updates Are Running in the Background
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) regularly performs automatic updates on your system. This is true for both Windows and Mac systems on the UTSA domain.
OIT recommends you Log Out of (not shut down) your UTSA computer Monday through Thursday to allow any updates to take place while you are not using the computer. Otherwise, your computer may be running these updates/scans while you are using the computer the most, taking up valuable memory resources.
OIT recommends you Shut Down your computer on Fridays before leaving your office for the weekend.
If you have any questions about the update/scanning schedule please contact OITConnect.
Virus
A computer virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs and replicates itself. For example, a virus might attach itself to a program such as an Excel document.
Virus software could slow down the speed of your computer. If you suspect your machine might have a virus, contact OITConnect immediately.
For more information on computer viruses, visit the Viruses page located in our Information Security section.
Lack of Memory
A computer requires a certain amount of memory to run all the programs and software installed.
To verify if your computer needs more memory or to see how much memory your computer has, contact OITConnect.
Outdated System, Hardware or Software
Your computer or the applications you run may be out of date, or not updated. Contact OITConnect for assistance.
Running Many Programs At One Time
Running multiple programs at one time may cause your computer to run slower than normal. To alleviate this, close applications that are not in use.
For more assistance, contact OITConnect.
