The Information Security Administrator (ISA) Program

What is the ISA program?

The ISA program, as mandated by UT System, is designed to assist in maintaining a secure computing environment for the University of Texas at San Antonio. The program complements the ongoing security initiatives of the Information Security Office.

Who can be an ISA?

The ISA must be assigned by the organization and approved by the Information Security Office. ITAs are eligible to be an ISA.

What are the responsibilities of an ISA?

  • Implements and complies with all information technology policies and procedures relating to assigned systems.
  • Performs an annual information security risk assessment for Mission Critical Information Resources.
  • Reports general computing and security incidents to the institutional ISO.
  • Assists, as member of the ISA Work Group, the ISO in developing, implementing, and monitoring the Information Security Program.
  • Establishes reporting guidance, metrics, and timelines for the ISO to monitor effectiveness of security strategies in both the centralized and decentralized operations.
  • Reports at least annually to the ISO about the status and effectiveness of information resources security controls.

NOTE: Responsibilities as outlined by UTS165 - UT System Information Resources Use and Security Policy.

What are the benefits of becoming an ISA?

Most administrators support a variety of systems and applications to ensure that their organization operates at the highest level possible.

The Information Security Office recognizes the importance of these operations and believes that assisting in securing the data and information resources is essential.

Along with assisting in securing data, professional education through SANS training is also a benefit of this program. The UT System CISO has provided subsidized training for courses provided by SANS that can be taken online. The course descriptions and pricing are available to registered ISA's.
