Our first-ever capital campaign—We Are UTSA – A Top-Tier Campaign—was launched April 12 with a faculty and staff event in the morning and an evening event at the Downtown Campus with community supporters, fireworks and a candle-lit procession of more than 450 students.
At these impressive events, I was pleased to announce that we have raised $94.3 million—78 percent of our $120 million campaign goal. As a major force in our aspirations for premier research status, we are well under way in an endeavor that requires significant gains in scholarship and faculty research support.
Although achieving Tier One may be a number of years away, there is much that we are already doing that is top tier. Faculty endowments attract and retain experts in their fields who teach our students, encourage innovation and serve our community. Scholarships reward bright students and fund opportunities for enrichment such as study abroad. Both are now possible because of support from community leaders, friends and alumni.
One example of this support is Doug Frantz, assistant professor in the College of Sciences, who is leading research in growing new heart muscles and turning cancerous cells benign—with the potential to save many lives.
And, if being a member of a marching band takes commitment and talent, then being a drum major for UTSA’s brand new marching band takes passion and drive to the next level. Annie Moras has both, and scholarship support is making it possible for Annie to focus on her dreams of making great marching music while studying to become a music teacher.
At the heart of everything we do at The University of Texas at San Antonio is a belief that the people of Texas deserve access to exceptional opportunities that can forever change the lives of students, the university, the community and the world. That idea has been central to our mission since the university was created in 1969, and is driving us forward as we reach for the highest levels of excellence.
I am grateful to our faculty and staff for their work and focus on student success. Additionally, I want to thank the many friends of UTSA who have made the university a priority. Investing in a program, a student or research at UTSA through the capital campaign is an investment in the future and the strength of our community.
We are UTSA. Go Roadrunners!
