Whether you need to update an older publication or create something entirely new, the publications staff can be of help. We offer text and design suggestions, budget estimates, photographic services, editing, art direction and oversight of the printing process. We can even arrange to have your publication labeled with addresses, sorted and mailed. Read on to learn about our process.
- If you need a publication created or produced, begin by filling out our Publication Planning Worksheet. This form will help you think about the purpose, the audience, the structure and the budget for your publication. This form can also be used if you are just requesting a reprint or update of an existing publication. Once you submit the form to us, a staff member will contact you to set up a meeting with an editor and a graphic designer. You have now become our client.
- At the meeting, we'll discuss ideas for your publication that meet your budget and deadline. (As a general rule, it takes about four to six weeks from the time your copy is submitted to have a finished product.) This is the time to discuss the look and the purpose of your publication as well as the preparation of your text and how your publication will be distributed.
- You authorize us to begin your job when you submit a service request form (available from the public files on Outlook). Send us your prepared text on a floppy disk or by e-mail attachment. Our designers and editors will take it from there, consulting with you on any problems or changes that come up.
- We'll send you a proof of the design for your approval. You need to look over this proof very carefully, checking all text and images for errors. This is the time to make corrections only, not to make significant changes in copy or appearance.
- Once you sign off on the proof, we'll send your job to the printer. We press-check the job, examine printer's proofs (or bluelines) and monitor schedules. The job will be delivered to campus (or mailed, if that is your specification). Your office will be billed for our services.
