GRADUATE STUDENTS AWARDS PROGRAM
The
The STIMHR is a National
Institute of Health (NIH)-funded program intended to increase mental-health
research at UTSA. Specifically, STIMHR strives to stimulate and enrich the
capacity of faculty to undertake research focusing on mental-health issues in
UTSA is in the midst of an exciting transition from an
institution dedicated to quality undergraduate education to one that also
promotes superior research and scholarship. Increased attention to
mental-health issues that are relevant to

Participate in
relevant STIMHR-related activities to enhance the capacity of UTSA graduate
students undertaking mental-health research.
The STIMHR Graduate Student
Research Awards provide a stipend of
$1,000 for the Spring 2007 semester. Awards are
open to a wide range of study with particular
emphasis on undertaking and producing research theses on significant and
practical issues relevant to mental-health issues among the
The STIMHR Advisory Committee will review the applications and determine awards based on the merit of the personal statement. The awards will be used to support the project and may help defray related costs including travel, materials, and participants. Award recipients will be required to submit a report of their activities to Dr. Raymond Garza, Program Director along with their long-range research plans.
Eligibility Requirements:

Admittance to a
master’s or doctoral program at UTSA
·
Research agenda
focused on mental health that indicates potential for practical application.

Willingness to:
o Identify a research topic for
the Spring 2006 semester
o Write a thesis or dissertation,
present findings, and pursue publication in traditional academic outlets and in
media for the general public
o Participate in relevant
graduate student activities associated with the STIMHR program
Preferences:

Basic understanding of
significant mental-health concerns
·
Motivation to conduct
mental-health research in the context of

Evidence of prior
involvement or interest in mental-health issues

Desire to work closely
with a UTSA faculty mentor over the entire period of study

apply for a STIMHR Graduate Student Research Award, please complete the
information requested below and attach to this form (Note: You
must apply separately for admittance to the graduate schools at UTSA).

Vision and Personal Statement: Submit a
two-to-four page, typed (double-spaced) personal statement in which you reflect
on your familiarity with and/or interest in mental-health issues and how your
participation in STIMHR will help you make contributions to mental-health
research. Include a brief description of your research interests in areas of
particular concern and potential impact regarding mental-health issues and how
they can be addressed in the context of South Texas. Describe how the type of
research you are interested in conducting will improve the knowledge base of
mental-health issues that are relevant to the South Texas community and
propose, through research, solutions on issues related to topics such as
cultural and environmental factors, health communication, and acculturation as
they apply to the mental-health of South Texans.

Two Letters of Recommendation: Letters of
recommendation should address your qualifications as a candidate for this
research awards program, reflect evidence of prior involvement in or potential
to conduct mental-health research, and convey evidence that you have
demonstrated the ability to become a change agent/advocate.
3) Biographical sketch: A biographical sketch of no more than two pages in length (double-spaced) should describe your educational background, academic interests and personal achievements.

Application Statement: I hereby submit my
application for the STIMHR Graduate Students Award Program. STIMHR has my

research topic by the spring of the first year of study, have a research agenda
