The South Texas Initiative for Mental-Health Research

Announces the Second Annual

GRADUATE STUDENTS AWARDS PROGRAM

The South Texas Initiative for Mental-Health Research (STIMHR) at UTSA is pleased to announce the availability of six research awards of $1,000 each for the Spring 2007 semester to graduate students who are involved in mental-health research or are planning to pursue this type of research.

The STIMHR is a National Institute of Health (NIH)-funded program intended to increase mental-health research at UTSA. Specifically, STIMHR strives to stimulate and enrich the capacity of faculty to undertake research focusing on mental-health issues in South Texas as well as provide mentorship opportunities and research awards to UTSA graduate students and faculty who are involved in or are planning to pursue study in the domain of mental health. More information is available online at www.utsa.edu/stimhr.

UTSA is in the midst of an exciting transition from an institution dedicated to quality undergraduate education to one that also promotes superior research and scholarship. Increased attention to mental-health issues that are relevant to South Texas will help UTSA achieve top-tier status as a research institution in Texas. To that end, the goal of the STIMHR is to advance UTSA’s research program in the mental-health arena by increasing the number of students conducting research focusing on mental-health issues in South Texas. This goal of addressing significant mental-health issues of a large, underserved, and understudied sector of South Texas shall be achieved through both faculty mentorship opportunities and research awards to UTSA graduate students pursuing study in this domain.

Award recipients are expected to:

(1)   Conduct research that links significant mental-health issues with the South Texas community.

(2)   Identify an appropriate faculty mentor that will oversee the research project.

(3)   Participate in relevant STIMHR-related activities to enhance the capacity of UTSA graduate students undertaking mental-health research.

The STIMHR Graduate Student Research Awards provide a stipend of $1,000 for the Spring 2007 semester. Awards are open to a wide range of study with particular emphasis on undertaking and producing research theses on significant and practical issues relevant to mental-health issues among the South Texas population. Ethnic-minority students are encouraged to apply.

The STIMHR Advisory Committee will review the applications and determine awards based on the merit of the personal statement. The awards will be used to support the project and may help defray related costs including travel, materials, and participants. Award recipients will be required to submit a report of their activities to Dr. Raymond Garza, Program Director along with their long-range research plans.
