The UTSA Enrollment Services Office held their first ever on-campus staff retreat on February 15th. The team was able to spend the day training and connecting while Financial Aid staff provided office coverage. Part of the retreat’s events included team building exercises such as partner yoga at the Recreation Center. Call center and front counter staff had the opportunity to not only challenge their strength and flexibility, but also see how they could be more effective with the help of a partner. Throughout the day, they also received training and updates from staff members in Admissions, Registrar, Fiscal Services, and Academic Advising, as well as, training on Customer Service that Human Resources facilitated. Staff left the retreat day more equipped to collaborate with each other and other university offices in order to better serve students. Enrollment Services would like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible.
President of the African Students Association, Diane Nwokey, was inspired to develop the Echoes of African event from topics presented in her Anthropology course. The event was held on February 23, 2013 and showcased Africa as a heritage tree and displayed how the continent’s extensive culture is significant to modern art, dance, music, language and other forms of popular culture around the world.
As part of Black History Month, UTSA hosted the 2013 Black History Knowledge Bowl on Feb. 26 in the University Center Denman Room (2.01.28) on the UTSA Main Campus. Student teams competed in tests of their knowledge of African-American history. The event fosters UTSA's core values of inclusiveness, collaboration, respect, innovation and excellence.

More than 290 UTSA students, faculty, staff, and community members attended the 2013 Black Heritage Banquet on Thursday, February 28, 2013. The event, which is sponsored by the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center, celebrated the conclusion of Black History Month at UTSA, which consisted of more than 15 programs throughout the month of February.
“The Black Heritage Banquet made a strong return as a campus tradition after a two year absence,” said Corey Benson, graduate assistant in the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center. “For the past two years, students had noticed that something was missing from UTSA’s Black History Month programs, and through their efforts and dedication, the event was not only brought back, but remarkably successful.”

UTSA College of Engineering and the Student Leadership Center Host The Storytelling Series Leadership Luncheon: Women in Engineering Spring 2013
The Storytelling Series Luncheon is an event hosted by the Student Leadership Center each semester. The purpose of the luncheon is to bring together students, faculty and staff in a casual atmosphere where they can connect and share their leadership stories. Those that attend are given the opportunity to network through sharing leadership ideas, experiences and challenges.
This semester the Student Leadership Center collaborated with the UTSA College of Engineering (COE) and Motorola Solutions, Inc. and held a special version of the luncheon for women in engineering on Friday, March 1st in the UTSA Applied Engineering and Technology Building. The idea for the luncheon was brought to the Student Leadership Center and the COE by an electrical engineering student, Justina Williams last fall semester.
