February 2001 The New Music Festival, hosted by UTSAs Division of Music, featured three nights of concerts devoted to The American Century. The festival included first performances of two new works by UTSA faculty composers. It also featured guest pianist James Lowe. (San Antonio Express-News 2/27/01 2D) UTSA faculty and staff will serve up green eggs and ham during the national Read Across America Day celebration held at the Downtown Campus. Local media personalities and elected officials will read to elementary children from Dr. Seuss books. (San Antonio Express-News 2/26/01 2B) A group of UTSA alumni are putting their business skills to good use as they operate their own Web development company. Web Head Group, which services more than 100 clients, is expanding their horizons toward international business. They are opening a branch office in Monterrey. (San Antonio Express-News 2/24/01 1D) Responding to a University of California recommendation to dispense with SAT scores as admissions criteria, UTSA President Ricardo Romo said he favored assigning less weight to the test for admissions decisions. Romo said the best predictor of college success is the high school curriculum a student takes and class ranking. (San Antonio Express-News 2/21/01 1A) A plan to establish 10 graduate degree programs jointly at UTSA and the nearby UT Health Science Center gained approval from the UT System Board of Regents. This one-of-a-kind program would allow both institutions to share faculty and academic research resources for several masters and doctoral degree plans in the life sciences. (2/16/01 1B) UTSA will serve up good food and great conversation during a fundraising event for UTSAs Honors Program. The event will feature UTSA faculty and community leaders leading discussion tables on topics such as water issues, Spanish literature, jazz, biosciences and the civil war. Committee Chair Harriett Romo hopes the event will not only stimulate interesting conversation, but will also encourage people to get out and read. (San Antonio Express-News 2/16/01 4F) Hackers beware. UTSA students are trying to make your job impossible. The Division of Information Systems recently began offering a new computer security course and hopes to win approval for a minor in information security and an institute devoted to teaching, research and security proselytizing. (San Antonio Business Journal 2/16/01 p. 1) UTSA promoted its advanced degree programs during graduate program day activities at the campus. The university offers 34 masters and four doctoral degree programs. (San Antonio Express-News 2/6/01 4B) UTSA was named one of the top 10 state agencies spending $5 million or more annually for supporting historically underutilized businesses. UTSA spent more than $5 million with HUBs during fiscal year 2000, which is 27.85 percent of all UTSA purchases. (San Antonio Express-News 2/5/01 1E) UTSAs Alumni Association hosted their 17th annual Diploma Dash 5K. More than 600 individuals participated in the race which is a benefit for student scholarships.
