UTSA
in the News is a synopsis of items that have appeared in periodicals
mentioning UTSA, its faculty, staff, students and programs. March 2001 UTSA assistant professor of political science Amy Jasperson got an early less in activism from her family. Jasperson, in her second year at UTSA, researches and writes about politics and womens issues. Her hero as a child was womens suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony. Jaspersons goals include gaining tenure and forming an independent political research consulting firm. (San Antonio Express-News 3/30/01 10F) Three UTSA faculty members have been selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the La Raza Faculty and Administrators Association. The group formed in the early 1980s to highlight issues involving Mexican Americans in higher education. UTSA recipients include Jude Valdez, vice president for extended services; Frank Pino, professor of foreign languages; and Bertha Perez, professor of education. (San Antonio Express-News 3/27/01 10B) Eighteen UTSA students received scholarships from Chicago-based Latino Initiatives for the Next Century (LINC) during ceremonies at UTSAs Downtown Campus. The scholarships were awarded to students based on need and academic performance. Overall 23 scholarships were presented to Texas students. (San Antonio Express-News 3/23/01 3B) UTSA has added nearly 11,000 compact discs to its musical librarya five-fold increase to its inventoryafter an heir to the collection sold it for less than half its appraised value. The collection was amassed by the late H.V. Doyle. The music will be located in the UTSA multimedia library. (San Antonio Express-News 3/22/01 2B) Two UTSA faculty members were inducted into the San Antonio Womens Hall of Fame. Barbara Kay Pino, associate professor of foreign languages, created an oral proficiency test used in area school districts. Linda Schott, associate professor and director of the UTSA Center for the Study of Women and Gender, is a historian specializing in womens history. (San Antonio Express-News 3/20/01 4D) UTSA public relations students are learning about marketing the hard way, they are actually designing and implementing their own advertising campaigns. The senior-level course is a comprehensive approach to teaching students the finer points of marketing. Students are teaming up with the San Antonio Sports Foundation "Dreams for Youth" program, the San Antonio Zoo, Sun Harvest Farms and AT&T wireless to develop campaigns. Joseph Massey, assistant professor of communication, teaches the course. (San Antonio Express-News 3/13/01 4B) UTSAs College of Business received $25,000 for its corporate sponsor program from SBC Communications. The gift will help the program promote ongoing curriculum, initiate new programs, recruit and retain faculty and defray travel and publications expenses for UTSA faculty and students.
