The University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Business has added a trilateral exchange component, that includes students in Canada and Mexico who are working toward an MBA in international business. A contingency of 30 visiting students recently spent a week in San Antonio to study firsthand what it is like to do business in the United States.

The University of Texas at San Antonio has received an $850,000 technology infrastructure grant to better inform Texans about higher education and career opportunities. The grant, awarded by the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board of Texas, will fund a two-year project using public and cable television, the Internet, and video conferencing and streaming to deliver educational information and programs to students and other Texas residents.

Passage of a bill to create a school of pharmacy at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and approval of three new doctoral programs at UTSA by the UT System Board of Regents last week is welcome, if not overdue, news for South Texas.

The University of Texas at San Antonio and Northwest Vista College have joined forces to allow students to transfer their community college credits to the university to complete any of three dozen bachelor degree programs. The 2+2 partnership, allows Northwest Vista students who have obtained associate degrees in arts or science to transfer their credits to 36 different degree programs at UTSA. On May 5, Marcus Puente became the youngest member on the Yorktown Independent School District school board. When he was 17, Marcus began attending school board meetings. After taking a government class at the University of Texas at San Antonio, his interest increased and he decided to run for a position in spite of his age Besides his responsibilities, Marcus still attends UTSA two days a week and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in business administration and information systems.

Last Tuesday, May 8, at the Downtown Campus of UTSA, a graduate scholarship grant was announced. The highpoint of the evening was the unveiling of a painting by the renowned local artist Jesse Trevino of "The Printer." This painting has been donated to UTSA Downtown to grace one of the walls of the building under construction, which will be ready for classes this fall.

In a milestone commencement ceremony for the University of Texas at San Antonio, Governor Rick Perry on Saturday urged graduates to remain ambitious, idealistic and virtuous--and to value the education they just completed. Perry, the first sitting governor to address UTSA graduates in the university's 32-year history, delivered a 20-minute speech that was alternately humous and philosophical.

The University of Texas at San Antonio ranked sixth among U.S. colleges and universities in the number of bachelor's degrees conferred to Hispanic graduatess, according to a survey published in the latest issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. (San Antonio Express-News 5/12/01 4B)
