presNotes

Dear Friend,

With spring semester over and commencement ceremonies concluded, another 2,700 upper classman have joined the ranks of UTSA alumni -- now more than 75,000 proud and strong. Congratulations to our graduates and their families. I know it took a lot of hard work and tenacity to earn their college degrees. I am proud of each and every one of them.

I also am proud to represent UTSA at a critical time for higher education in the state of Texas. In Austin, as the 81st regular session of the Texas Legislature draws to a close, it appears that progress is being made on a critical issue -- setting the stage for the creation of more national research universities serving Texas.

California has nine tier-one research universities. New York has seven. Texas has two public tier-one schools. Each year, 6,000 high-performing high school graduates leave Texas to go to national research universities elsewhere. If Texas is to compete in an ever increasing competitive global economy, we must keep more of our best students at home.

As one of seven emerging research universities in Texas, UTSA appreciates the community support, legislative recognition and student and faculty achievements that have gotten us to this point in our 40-year history. As UTSA enters its fifth decade, we look forward to what lies ahead as we build the Next Great Texas University.

Until next time,

Ricardo Romo
President, UTSA
