UTeach Program

The UTeach Program at UTSA allows students to explore the possibility of a career in teaching mathematics or science at middle school or high school. At the present time and in the foreseeable future there is a critical shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers.

Inaugural Issue.  We are pleased to announce that the UTeach Newsletter will now be distributed electronically.  This will allow for a more responsive newsletter that does not require as much time in development, and it will also reduce expenses, allowing more money to be used toward scholarships.  Special thanks to Tom Palmer and Maria Corral in UTSA’s Web and Multimedia Services for the design of this newsletter.

Student Enrollment.  The 2005-2006 Academic Year is the third year of UTeach implementation.  During the fall semester 2005 there were two UTeach courses offered – UTE 1011, with an enrollment of 39 students, and UTE 1021 with 18 students.  These compared with 37 in UTE 1011, and 18 in UTE 1021 in the previous fall semester.  During the current semester there are 21 students in UTE 1011 and 23 students in UTE 1021.  Enrollment has remained steady even with tighter scholarship qualifications.

New Steering Committee.  The Deans of the College of Sciences, the College of Education and Human Development, and the Honors College formed a new university committee to help facilitate the implementation of the UTeach program.  Drs. Betty Travis and Alyson Ponomarenko represent the College of Sciences, and Drs. Christine Moseley and Elizabeth Pate are from the College of Education and Human Development.  Rounding out the committee are UTeach faculty Dr. Judy Fowles and Paul TisdelDr. Joe Lazor, the Director of UTeach, chairs the committee.  The committee is exploring streamlined degree plans, recruitment of students, expansion of partnerships, and various student support systems.

Scholarships.  The Pat and Tom Frost Foundation has renewed its support for UTSA's UTeach program for an additional five years with a $300,000 grant to support scholarships for students willing to teach mathematics and science.  This generous donation will support the introductory UTeach courses, allowing students to explore the possibility of teaching mathematics or science.

UTSA's UTeach Program will again sponsor the Noyce Scholarships for students who wish to pursue a degree in mathematics or science and then teach in a public high school.  A student can qualify for as much as $10,000 per year for each of the junior and senior years (or one year in a post-baccalaureate program).  For more information visit the UTeach web page - Noyce.

New UTeach Office
The UTeach office has moved to JPL, 4th floor, room 4.01.10.  Also, there are two new staff members working in the office - Amy Clemens and Elizabeth Fowles.  Amy is a graduate student in the history program who will be graduating in May 2006, and Elizabeth is finishing her MBA in the College of Business.
