Classroom Management
Faculty members are tasked with setting the tone at the beginning of the course to foster a respectful learning environment. Distracted and disruptive behavior in the classroom should be addressed when it occurs. Several intervention strategy examples are listed below.
- Your syllabus should include classroom behavioral expectations.
- Direct the student to refrain from specific behaviors in the classroom.
- Direct the student to meet outside of class to discuss specific behaviors.
- Ask the student to meet prior to returning to class to discuss specific behaviors.
- When meeting with the student, refer to your class syllabus regarding behavioral expectations and the Student Code of Conduct.
- If the student does not respond to your attempts to de-escalate, you may dismiss the class or direct them to leave.
- If a student is asked to leave class and/or if dismissing class is necessary, report the incident to the Behavioral Intervention Team, the Department Chair, and the College Dean.
- For academic and grade grievance procedures, refer to Student Grievances.
