What is the scope of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)?
The scope of the BIT includes identifying, assessing and mitigating potential threats or concerning behaviors to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the campus community.
What happens after a BIT report is submitted?
- The team reviews the report to determine the immediacy and severity of the situation.
- The team gathers additional information from various sources, including interviews with the involved parties.
- The team determines if there is a potential safety threat.
- The team creates an action plan to address the situation reported. This may include interventions, referrals to on- or off-campus resources, or ongoing case management.
- If determined necessary, the team conducts a full threat assessment to evaluate and address the potential threat(s).
- The team follows up with the individual(s) involved.
- All actions are thoroughly documented.
- With ongoing, worsening or escalating behaviors, a new BIT report should be submitted.
What if I submit my report outside of typical business hours?
Reports are reviewed according to the university’s operating days and hours. If the potential threat or concerning behavior you wish to report is an emergency, contact the UTSA Police Department at 210-458-4911.
When will I receive a response after my report is submitted?
Your report will be reviewed within 48 operating university hours. If you have not received a response, please email ryne.medina@utsa.edu.
What if I’m afraid that reporting an individual/group will get them in trouble?
The BIT process is non-punitive. Each situation is assessed individually and resources are provided to prevent any acts of violence.
