Rolling into Campus: Officers Earn Bike Patrol Certification
Public Safety Officers (PSO) Madeline Lewis and Christian Andrade Santos are officially certified for bike patrol after completing a 32-hour course with the San Antonio Police Department’s Bike Patrol Unit. The rigorous training included classroom instruction, hands-on practice in community policy strategies, bike safety to riding techniques in low light and rough terrain.
PSO Lewis and Santos trained in various locations around San Antonio, including local parks and trails, preparing them to better navigate campus on two wheels. With bike patrols, officers can reach areas that vehicles can’t—and they’re often quicker to respond, too.
Even better, they’re easier to approach.
“People seem more open to chatting when we’re on bikes,” said PSO Lewis. “It’s a great way to connect with the campus community and share what we’re here for.”
UTSA’s Bike Patrol program began in 1994 to boost visibility and accessibility on campus. Today, seven public safety officers and 10 police officers are certified to patrol our campuses on bikes.
Next time you spot an officer riding by, feel free to wave or say hello—they’re here to help and happy to chat.
