Lean Six Sigma - Yellow Belt

Instruction is led by faculty from the UTSA Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems

Lean and Six Sigma, two methodologies evolved separately, share the same ultimate goal: answer voices of customers by achieving process excellence. While Lean is famous for its continuous pursuit of perfection, Six Sigma provides a structured data-driven methodology to achieve world-class operational capability. Integrating the two methodologies synergizes the improvement efforts for enhanced results.

This short course consists of two days of lecture-based coverage of topics in Lean and Six Sigma, from fundamental concepts to practical skills and case studies. The training course consists of lectures, discussions, hands-on simulation games, video clips, and review quizzes.

Our Approach

First Step to Lean

Yellow Belt is the introductory level of Lean Six Sigma certification, which is suitable for everyone who has an interest in learning and practicing continuous improvement. This course is designed with generalized contents applicable to all sectors.

Engineering Faculty-led

All Lean and Six Sigma courses are led by faculty from the UTSA College of Engineering. Lean and Six Sigma instructors are subject matter experts who embed a depth of experiential knowledge, alongside contemporary theory, in their courses.

Everyone Can Benefit

Personnel in all levels of the organization are welcome, including company executives, managers, engineers, front-line and office staff. Personnel in all sectors including service providers, manufacturers, and general offices can benefit.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the participants are expected to:

Understand the core concepts and terminology of Lean and Six Sigma
Independently practice fundamental skills of the Lean Six Sigma tool set
Perform in process improvement project teams

Course Outline

This short course consists of two days of lecture-based coverage of topics in Lean and Six Sigma

  • Day One

    Day One includes: The Foundation of Lean Systems, Preparing for the Changes, Starting the Changes, Improving the Value Streams, Pursuit of Perfection

  • Day Two

    Day Two includes: Six Sigma Overview, Starting Your Six Sigma Project, DMAIC: Measure, Analyze, and Improve, DMAIC: Control and Sustain, The Lean Six Sigma Journey.
