RPM Employee Spotlight: Alex Perez
Meet Alex Perez, Director for Institutional Construction with Real Estate and Property Management (RPM). Through his work on a wide variety of projects, Alex’s dedication and expertise have made a lasting impact at UTSA.
Alex joined UTSA in August 2015 as a Facilities Project Coordinator with a team that was then known as Engineering and Project Management. He quickly demonstrated his commitment to excellence and took on a full-time position in October 2018. In his current role, Alex is responsible for managing construction projects valued at under $10 million. He oversees project execution and leads a talented team of project managers and student workers. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities.
Reflecting on the dynamic nature of his work, Alex recognizes that collaborating with university stakeholders, vendors and contractors to complete projects on time and within budget requires extensive coordination and communication. He is inspired by Simon Sinek’s insights, particularly the quotes, “When we know why we do what we do, everything falls into place,” and “Success is a team sport,” which underscores the importance of purpose and teamwork in achieving project goals.
Being part of the university’s growth is one of Alex’s favorite aspects of his work. In his role, he has contributed to significant projects such as the TxDOT Dedicated Bike & Pedestrian Facilities aimed at enhancing walkability and bikeability on campus, as well as the Southwest Campus Phase Two project, which involves comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural and IT improvements.
In addition to his professional role at the university, Alex is also a UTSA graduate—in 2015, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. As a UTSA alum, he takes great pride in improving spaces for students, faculty and staff.
When he’s not managing projects, Alex participates in outdoor activities and plays basketball to stay active. He enjoys spending quality time with his daughter and his wife—who is expecting their second child in November. As Alex notes, this promises to add more joy—busyness—to his life!
