
Southwest Campus Improvements
In July 2022, the Southwest School of Art successfully integrated with the University of Texas at San Antonio. Now known as the Southwest Campus, the site houses academic and community programs dedicated to advancing arts education in San Antonio. Recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Southwest Campus has cultural and historical significance to the San Antonio community.
Overview
UT San Antonio is committed to its role as responsible stewards of the location. Following the integration, the university began work on a variety of infrastructure and facility projects to support the growing campus community and preserve the beauty and integrity of the campus’s buildings long into the future.
Phase One
The Southwest Campus Phase One project, which has been completed, largely focused on improvements that support the growing campus community, such as upgraded technology and enhancements to the day-to-day campus experience, including:
- Upgraded Internet Access Improved Wi-Fi coverage and connectivity for faster, more reliable network access.
- Stronger Security. New access control systems and updated hardware help keep campus buildings and community safe.
- Improved Technology Infrastructure. Newly constructed rooms support cabling and equipment for a connected campus.
- Upgraded Wayfinding. New building signs make it easier to find your way around campus.
- Improved Accessibility. Updated parking areas and a new accessible ramp at the Urschel building support ADA compliance.

Phase Two
The Southwest Campus Phase Two project focuses on improvements to physical infrastructure, such as fire and life safety upgrades, mechanical replacements, plumbing code upgrades, utility improvements and parking enhancements. These include:
- Upgraded HVAC systems. These new systems improve indoor air quality, energy efficiency and overall comfort.
- Structural Repairs. Masonry repairs and structural improvements support a safe, beautiful campus.
- Shutter Repairs. Repaired and refreshed shutters help preserve the beauty and character of campus buildings.
- Freshly Sealed Parking Lot. Southwest Lot 1 has been resealed to protect the lot and extend its life.
