Research Preparedness & Response

March 25, 2020

What’s New

  • As of Wednesday, March 25, all non-critical on-campus laboratory research is on pause until further notice except as described below. During this pause, only essential personnel may enter UTSA laboratories. Only essential research activities and core facilities pre-approved specifically by the relevant associate dean for research (ADR) and the VPREDKE office are permitted to continue.

  • Researchers should have their shutdown plan activated for an anticipated pause of at least six to eight weeks. All labs in “pause mode” should have a Lab Door Notice displaying the names and phone numbers of contact people for emergencies, the designated “lab well-check” person (defined below under Important Policies), and (in the event an essential activity exemption is granted) a list of essential personnel.
  • VPREDKE has extended the deadlines for the GREAT and Connect seed grant programs:
    • GREAT forms are now due April 7
    • Connect forms are now due April 14

Current Situation

All REDKE staff continue to support protocol guidance and modifications; animal and safety support; and all grant proposal and management activities. New studies will continue to be reviewed according to regulatory and sponsor requirements.

Human Subject Research

Any face-to-face research with human subjects is temporarily suspended. Where possible, researchers should transition to remote interactions (e.g. phone, video) for all studies. Faculty should complete the Modification Application (HRP-203) prior to implementing any changes to their protocol, including this methodological change.
