Criminal Background Check

UTSA Hiring Process

The first step in the process actually starts when a department begins the process to fill a position. In that all positions at UTSA are currently considered security sensitive, a remark to that effect must be included in the job posting and/or advertisements.

If the position is:

  • A Staff, benefits eligible position, complete the requisition in STARS and select the appropriate response in the drop down box for the Security Sensitive field. Note: Currently the President has designated all staff positions to be security sensitive so the ‘Yes' option will always be selected as long as this policy is in effect.
  • A Staff, non-benefits eligible position, e.g. work study, temporary, occasional, etc., insure that the following sentence “This position is Security Sensitive” is included in whatever recruitment instruments are created, e.g. job advertisements, web postings, etc.
  • A Faculty position , insure that the following sentence, “The position is Security Sensitive” is included in whatever recruitment instruments are created, e.g. job advertisements, web postings, etc.

The second step starts when a finalist for the position has been identified and BEFORE a job offer is made.

  • Complete the Criminal Background Check request form* and fax or deliver it to the UTSA Police: 210-458-4022.

  • The UTSA Police will complete the investigation and communicate the results to either the Hiring Official or the Vice President of the hiring departments.

    • Once the results are reviewed and a management decision to hire has been made you can:

      • If the position is a Staff, Benefits eligible position, submit the Hiring Proposal via STARS and make the job offer but only after the Hiring Proposal has been approved.

      • If the position is NOT a Staff, Benefits eligible position, make the job offer and continue to follow your departments hiring process.
