Compared to the 2024-2025 academic year, student participation in the Department of Public Safety’s Bike Theft Prevention Program increased 61% since August 2025, reflecting growing awareness about bike security and the services available to help. With several months remaining in the current reporting period, the department continues their outreach efforts through upcoming community engagement events on campus.

“For Public Safety, the increase means more than just numbers,” said Police Chief Stephanie Schoenborn. “This program is about making safety easy and accessible. Every registered bike gives officers another tool to help return lost or stolen property and reduce theft opportunities.  When more students register, we’re better able to help when it matters most.”

The Bike Theft Prevention Program makes registration quick and convenient. Students can register their bikes in person at the Bosque Street Building or during Public Safety community engagement events held throughout the year. The process takes only a few minutes and can make a big difference. Students who register their bikes at a Public Safety event can also receive smart riding and security tips from our officers, as well as a free U-lock, while supplies last.

Through a partnership with Campus Services, students can register and enter a few details about their bike or scooter, including the brand, model, color and serial number. The information is stored in a secure database and can be used to help identify and return property if it is lost or stolen.

In addition to registration, Public Safety offers free long-term bike storage at any time of the year — a valuable option for students who will be away from campus for an extended period.

Whether it’s a holiday weekend, spring break or the summer months, storing a bike with Public Safety helps protect it from theft, weather damage and vandalism. The service gives students peace of mind knowing their bike is secured in a monitored location until they return.

Together, bike registration and secure storage are part of Public Safety’s broader approach to theft prevention. These services give students practical ways to safeguard their property throughout the year.

Protect your ride and take advantage of the resources designed to help keep you — and your property — safe.
