UTSA University Excellence Awards

Tuesday April 21, 2020 - 4:00 p.m.

Join the Roadrunner community for a special livestreamed ceremony where the 2020 awardees will be announced live! A URL to attend will be sent a few days prior to the event.

The goal of the UTSA University Excellence Awards program is to honor outstanding UTSA employees across the tri-campuses who demonstrate excellent work performance. Five University Excellence Awards are presented to UTSA staff for emerging leadership, dynamic leadership, teamwork, extraordinary initiative and overall excellence. 

One Howe Service Award is presented to faculty or staff for exemplary dedication to undergraduate students. Up to four President’s Distinguished Diversity Awards are presented to staff, faculty and students. 

Recipients of the following awards will be recognized at the annual University Excellence Awards Ceremony in April and be presented with a monetary prize and a plaque.

Nomination Forms - Deadline February 21, 2020 

To access and submit a nomination, select an award from the list below, enter your UTSA email address on the Office 365 landing page, then login using your UTSA ID (ABC123) and your passphrase when prompted.  If you’re already logged on to PeopleSoft, you will go straight to the nomination page.

For descriptions of the awards, please see below. Teams or workgroups who are selected will share the monetary award.

UTSA University Excellence Awards Descriptions

  • Rising Star Award
    The Rising Star Award recipient must be a new employee with less than (3) three years of continuous service with the University and who has made significant contributions throughout the year to his or her area, or to the University community.  This individual has innovative ideas and has made significant contributions.  They have a demonstrated record of improvement, have progressed through cooperation, initiative, and are self-starters with a take-charge attitude.  This talented employee has volunteered to assist when and where needed. (staff nominations accepted; up to $1000 prize)
  • Leadership Award
    The Leadership Award recipient must be currently functioning in a supervisory capacity; has promoted departmental and University mission and goals through actions and job performance; demonstrated exceptional leadership ability; fostered a positive and motivating work environment; maintained open communication lines within the department and throughout UTSA; encouraged professional development; demonstrated fairness and equity in resolving employee and work-related issues and remained receptive to constructive feedback concerning his or her own job performance. (staff nominations accepted; up to $1000 prize)
  • Team Spirit Award
    The Team Spirit Award will be awarded to a group of staff employees who has demonstrated exceptional ability to foster collaboration, communication, and cooperation among colleagues internal and/or external to their department.  The team’s action has significantly improved customer service or increased customer satisfaction for specific UTSA customers; has significantly improved a work process or system or has significantly increased the productivity and efficiency of an operation or work unit. (staff nominations accepted; up to $1000 prize)
  • Extra Mile Award
    The Extra Mile Award recognizes an individual with (3) three years or more of continuous service with UTSA and who has taken the initiative to contribute to the success of UTSA through his or her outstanding contributions at work.   Extra efforts demonstrated in their accomplishments, timeliness, and follow-through, willingness to help fellow employees; provide good customer service with creativity, dedication, cooperation and reliability.  He or she has performed at a level above and beyond normal job requirements that have resulted in furthering the department’s and UTSA’s goals and mission. (staff nominations accepted; up to $1000 prize)
  • Order of the Roadrunner Award
    The Order of the Roadrunner Award will be given to an individual who demonstrates exemplary service and commitment to UTSA and the achievement of its goals through his or her actions throughout the year.  This individual has enhanced the quality of work-life in ways that significantly increase productivity and efficiency for colleagues or customers to include developing creative solutions; provided outstanding and ongoing excellence in services to faculty, staff, students, and/or other UTSA customers.  This is the highest honor that a UTSA staff member can receive for his or her dedication to the UTSA community. (staff nominations accepted; $1000 prize)
  • Richard S. Howe Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award
    The Richard S. Howe Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award was established in 2002 through a gift to the university by Mrs. Walter W. McAllister Jr. and is named in honor of longtime engineering professor Richard S. Howe.  This award is presented to faculty or staff members who have shown exemplary commitment towards UTSA undergraduates.  The recipients of this award must have demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching and/or service to undergraduate students, served as an advocate for undergraduate education and engaged in activities to promote student access and success. (staff and faculty nominations accepted; up to $2000 prize)

  • President’s Distinguished Diversity Award
    In keeping with UTSA Core Values, the President’s Distinguished Diversity Awards bestow the highest level of recognition to individuals or groups of faculty, staff and students whose work helps the UTSA community think about and practice diversity and inclusion in creative and collaborative ways. The awards especially seek to recognize efforts to engage students in cross-cultural activities to demonstrably extend their knowledge of communities different from their own and/or to enhance their multicultural competence for working with diverse communities at UTSA, San Antonio, Texas, and beyond. (faculty, staff and student nominations accepted; $500 and $1000 prizes)
