Barbara J. Baran-Centeno is the Deputy Officer for Business Affairs at The University of Texas at San Antonio. She oversees Administrative and Facilities Support areas, which include Human Resources, Facilities, Real Estate, Business Contracts and Purchasing. Barbara leads a talented team of credentialed HR professionals whose focus is assisting and supporting departments in hiring, managing, retaining, supporting, and training UTSA employees. In the past 15 years, she has transformed the university’s Human Resources Department from transactional processing to one that delivers collaborative consultation. 

Prior to joining UTSA, she held positions as the Director of Human Resources at Sony Semiconductor and Employee Relations Manager at Advanced Micro Devices in San Antonio. In both the public and private sectors, Barbara has a proven record of accomplishment of business process improvement and re-engineering to improve efficiencies.  During the PeopleSoft implementation, Barbara served as the HCM VP Liaison for the shared services campuses. She has also served as a member of the PeopleSoft Operating Committee and SACs reaccreditation committee. 

Barbara has co-authored an article on successful return to work strategies. In addition, she has delivered presentations at national CUPA conferences on Successful Onboarding Strategies; Managing, Retrieving, and Analyzing HR Data in a Complex World; and Developing and Managing an Employee Relations Database.

Barbara is a member of World at Work, Society for Human Resource Management, College and University Professionals Association (CUPA), Texas Higher Education Human Resources Association (THEHRA), Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), San Antonio Compensation Association (SACA), and San Antonio Liaison Group (SAILG).

Barbara holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Niagara University, a Master of Science Degree in Health Care Administration from Trinity University, and an MBA from St. Mary’s University.  She is a Certified Compensation Professional through World at Work, Texas Licensed Worker’s Compensation Adjuster and Six Sigma certified. She has more than 30 years of experience in leadership and management positions in both the private and public sectors.
