Rowdy Through the Years
UTSA is celebrating its 55th anniversary on June 5, 2024, and the bold journey of the university’s beloved mascot, Rowdy the Roadrunner, reflects the same spirit and growth of the university. Over the years, Rowdy has undergone several changes in appearance, and this evolution caught the attention of San Antonio artist and UTSA multimedia specialist, Javier Gonzalez Gil.
Inspired by his mother’s artistry, Gonzalez began drawing at the young age of eight. Within two years, he began delving into digital art, animation, and video projects. Following high-school Gonzalez transitioned directly into the professional world, offering his creative services to local and national branding campaigns. After gaining over 15 years of experience in the agency world, Gonzalez was thrilled to bring his artistic expertise to UTSA’s Office of Strategic Enrollment, where he produces creative work that encourages students and others to pursue their goals.
Since joining UTSA in 2021, Gonzalez became fascinated with Rowdy's transformation, exploring UTSA Libraries Special Collections archives and discovering various photographs of Rowdy over the years. Rowdy became UTSA’s official mascot on December 9, 1977, and made his first appearance four years later at the university’s inaugural basketball game and first-ever NCAA event in 1981.
In March 2024, Gonzalez learned about an art contest being hosted by the UTSA Campus Technology Store. To capture the spirited transformation of Rowdy, Gonzalez submitted a nostalgic digital painting entitled, “Rowdy Through the Years.” Although the artwork did not win the contest, it encapsulated the essence and evolution of a cherished university mascot that has brought a heightened sense of joy and community to UTSA and San Antonio.
“Working in marketing, I've seen many images from the university and have always loved Rowdy's evolution,” said Gonzalez. “The opportunity to create something for the contest allowed me to delve deep into Rowdy’s history. I found myself wondering, 'How many Rowdys do we have?' and discovered numerous versions—some hilarious, to be honest. I loved creating a piece that reflects Rowdy’s history."
Rowdy's evolution mirrors UTSA's own growth and trajectory – always evolving toward a brilliant future that adapts to change and innovation. UTSA and Rowdy represent a vibrant Roadrunner community that honors its history while anticipating a future filled with new milestones and bold achievements.
