Roadrunner Memorial Garden Debuts February 9

The dedication event for the Roadrunner Memorial Garden is set for February 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. Facilities’ Engineering & Project Management team oversaw construction over the past four months. The space will be a tribute to Roadrunners who passed and whose spirit will live on forever within the hearts of fellow Roadrunners. The garden is located near the oval bus station south of Peace Circle, in front of the North Paseo Building.

The rain location for the event will be the University Room on the second floor of the Business Building.

Student Government Association President Marcus Thomas shared his sentiments about the Roadrunner Memorial Garden: “The Memorial Garden serves as a place to honor and remember those who have sadly been taken away from us too early. It is designated as a safe space for Roadrunners to come together, reflect and mourn those losses,” said Thomas.

The Memorial Garden includes a semicircular paved plaza with a limestone-faced, three-tiered, semicircular retaining wall defining to its edge. Three flagpoles with concrete foundations proudly stand north of the stone-faced retaining wall. Facilities installed LED up lighting to illuminate each flagpole at night, and electrical infrastructure will be added for future tree lighting. The project developed over a three-year span and includes a plaque recognizing its purpose and a sidewalk to enter the space.

The project was advanced by Business Affairs, Development, SGA, Student Affairs, UTSA Alumni Association and student donors. The Department of Development partnered with SGA to raise $39,000, well exceeding the $25,000 target.

Thanks to everyone who made this dream a reality for the Roadrunner community.
