UTSA Students Attend Snow Measurement Field School

NASA MIRO CAMEE Ph.D. students YoungHyun Koo and Jullian Williams recently attended Snow Measurement Field School in New Hampshire. Hosted by the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, the program offered an experiential learning opportunity for participants to dive into snow science. Topics of study included snow pits and snow layering, tools for measuring depth and snow water equivalent, and ground-based remote sensing systems.
Koo and Williams collaborated with fellow attendees to conduct mini field campaigns that incorporated the tools and techniques discussed throughout the program. "I figured out how the snow properties changed over the day," said Koo, noting that both snow temperature and density fluctuate as the day progresses. "I was looking at the change in ice dynamics depending on canopy cover," added Williams. "I used different snow-water equivalents and stratigraphy."
