Campus Rec is celebrating NIRSA Recreational Sports & Fitness Day on Monday, February 23. Please come by and participate - there's lots to do!

This day was established to focus on the positive benefits of recreational sports, fitness activities, and wellness programs to Americans of all ages. It also represents the founding day of the NIRSA organization.

On February 22, 1950, Dr. William Wasson organized twenty African-American men and women intramural directors from eleven Historically Black Colleges to attend the first Intramural Conference at Dillard University in New Orleans. The National Intramural Association (NIA) was formed. Dr. Wasson served as the first President of the association and is considered the founder of the NIRSA. The NIA eventually became the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in 1975.

Today, there are more than 4,000 members on more than 700 campuses and universities, as well as on U.S. military installations, in public park and recreation departments, correctional facilities, not-for-profit organizations, and private enterprises. NIRSA is a non-profit membership organization that leads in many recreational sports areas: training and professional development, intramural sports, fitness programming, sports clubs, recreation facilities, outdoor recreation, wellness programs, informal recreation, and aquatic programs. UTSA Campus Recreation is an institutional member of the NIRSA.

Both Kick-Off presentations will be held on the main campus in the HEB University Center/Travis Room (2.202).

The UTSA Student Volunteer of the Year Award was created to honor an outstanding student for their time, effort and personal commitment to volunteerism and enhancing civic life in their community. Applicants should also embody the true spirit of civic engagement and volunteerism. Please nominate or encourage your students to apply.

Applicants must be currently enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio and be in good standing (financial, discipline, academic, etc) with the university and have at least a 2.75 overall cumulative GPA. Nominations and self-nominations are both accepted. The winner will be announced at the University Life Awards on Thursday, April 2, 2015 in the HEB University Center Ballrooms. Finalists will be called prior to the event and are strongly encouraged to attend.

Applicants will also have the option to submit their application for consideration for the Sandra Cisneros "Service to Community" Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship can range from $450-$500. To qualify:

• Student must be in good standing (as described above)
• Must be enrolled at UTSA for the Fall 2015 semester
• Must have a FAFSA on file to show eligibility to receive the scholarship

All completed Student Volunteer of the Year Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, March 4, 2015, by 11:45pm to be considered.

As we begin a new semester, let’s all set new goals to engage in staff/faculty development regarding emergency preparedness. The UTSA Office of Emergency Management and UTSA Police Department – Crime Prevention Unit are offering many courses of interest this semester: learn about personal security and safety awareness, become a Floor Captain, interface with the National Weather Service, and learn how to help others in times of crisis, just to name a few.

Additionally, you may have noticed some changes and additions to the HR Training and Development course catalog regarding Emergency Management and Police Department sponsored trainings. In late fall, a new training category was developed for the course catalog entitled Emergency Preparedness (EP). In the past, all emergency management and Police sponsored trainings were coded under Safety (SA) or Staff Development (SD). Under the new catalog, all emergency management and PD courses will now be recorded as Emergency Preparedness (EP), and all past student history dating back to the inception of these courses have been re-coded with the EP prefix.

To register, visit MyTraining to confirm your seat and ensure you receive credit for the course.

The Roadrunner of the Month Award is sponsored by the Student Leadership Center to recognize outstanding UTSA student leadership contributions. Students, faculty, or staff can nominate a student for Roadrunner of the Month, the Dean of Students Outstanding Leadership Award. Each student selected monthly inspires other UTSA students to strive to be leaders on campus, within the community, and beyond.

Nominees must meet these criteria to be considered for the award:

• Must be a full-time UTSA undergraduate or graduate student
• Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher at the time of nomination
• Must have demonstrated excellence in leadership above and beyond typical expectations
• Nominations should be for actions that positively impact UTSA
• Completed Roadrunner of the Month Nomination Forms are due online by the last Monday of each month at 4 pm
