UTSA welcomes Christian Menefee ’10 for Black History Month keynote

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee ’10 will deliver a keynote speech at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 28, in the Student Union Retama Auditorium (SU 2.02.02). His keynote is part of UTSA’s Black History Month celebration, themed “Honor the Past, Be the Present, Create the Future.”

As the Harris County Attorney, Menefee is the chief civil lawyer for the largest county in Texas. He is the youngest person and the first African-American to be elected to the position, which he has held since 2020.

Menefee is a civil litigation attorney who was recently recognized as a 2019 Texas Rising Star by Super Lawyers. While at UTSA, the first-generation college student was elected vice president of the Student Government Association, and he was recognized as the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. International Undergraduate of the Year. He graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

After graduating from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis and interning at the Harris County Public Defender’s Office, Menefee began his legal practice which included advising the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, advising immigrants and their families, and working with Texas Appleseed on expanding alternatives to involuntary commitment for the mentally ill.

Menefee has served on Houston’s Independent Police Oversight Board, which is charged with evaluating all Houston Police Department internal affairs investigations involving excessive force or the use of a firearm. He also served on the boards of the Houston Young Lawyers Association (HYLA), the State Bar of Texas’s Minority Counsel Program, and a nonprofit aimed at providing job readiness programs to ex-offenders.

“Christian was an active and impactful student leader while at UTSA, and we are excited to welcome him back to help us commemorate Black History Month,” said LT Robinson, senior vice provost for student affairs and dean of students.
