The Alumni Association Gala, one of UTSA’s signature events, took the award for Best Nonprofit Event in the Over $75,000 category, in the latest Antonian Awards competition. The award recognized the university and its partner JLen Events for excellence in planning and executing the 2022 Gala, which raises funds to support student scholarships.

JLen Events’ CEO is Jamie Cooke ’04, a UTSA alumna and Alumni Association board member. Her firm coordinated the 2022 gala’s venue management, food and beverage service, musical entertainment and vendor contracts to execute a formal evening that had to come together in eight weeks. Last year’s gala hosted 500 guests and served as a comeback. It had not been celebrated for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From entertainment to speaking remarks to sponsorship assistance, continuity was crucial,” Cooke recalled.

The gala featured UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, Rowdy the Roadrunner, the Spirit of San Antonio, the UTSA Cheer team and a silent auction featuring over 500 items, including a puppy. In all, UTSA raised over $78,000 to support student success.

UTSA recognized April Ancira ’03, Susan Hough ’91 and Martin Salinas ’94 as Alumna of the Year, with the Lifetime Achievement award and with the Distinguished Service Award, respectively.

Founded in 2015, the Antonian Awards recognize individuals and organizations in San Antonio and the surrounding area that represent every facet of an event.
