On March 16-19, we will host a team of eight peer reviewers on our campus as the next step in our race to reaccreditation.
Over the last month, we sent you several messages addressing UTSA’s financial planning in light of our rapidly changing circumstances. We are writing today to follow-up on those messages and our very productive discussion sessions last week with the Academic Council, University Leadership Council, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate and our academic deans.

On Wednesday afternoon, all vice presidents, deans and vice provosts presented their FY21 budget plans to the University Leadership Council. The plans will now go to the Resource Management Team, then forwarded for presidential final approval. These next steps in our process bring us closer to finalizing our budget for this coming academic year.

Over the last several weeks, I have shared updates with all of you regarding UTSA’s FY21 budget. Our work over the last few years to create a budget model that is transparent and participatory provided a particularly important foundation for this year, one where we face extraordinary and unpredictable circumstances.
These last few months have been challenging, and we are all concerned that the pandemic situation in San Antonio and in Texas remains very unstable. The health and well-being of our entire community are constantly at the forefront as we develop adaptable plans for the fall semester.
This week we welcomed UTSA’s Reaffirmation of Accreditation Committee in a series of virtual meetings with faculty, staff and students from across the university.
I hope that you have settled in to the fall semester and are enjoying the sense of discovery that comes with a new academic year. I am truly amazed by how far we’ve come since March and our ability to rapidly adapt the ways we learn, live, teach, work and research – with truly remarkable results.

Every October, our community comes together to give back through the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC), hosted in partnership with United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. As Honorary Chairs of UTSA's SECC campaign, Peggy and I look forward to seeing the positive impact UTSA will make on the lives of so many in our community in the midst of this challenging year.
As we approach the midpoint of the fall semester, we want to thank you for all that you continue to do to navigate the complexities of the pandemic while promoting excellence in the quality of teaching and support of our students.
I want to offer a big thank you to each and every one of you. You all have done an amazing job staying positive and following the Roadrunner Pact this semester. Our relatively low number of confirmed COVID cases at UTSA presently are a testament to your determination in doing your part to stop the spread.
Over the last month, we have come together as a community to support the State Employee Charitable Campaign. Your compassion and generous donation will provide invaluable assistance to over 500 charities throughout our community, including three organizations at UTSA.

Now that we have entered the second half of the fall semester, our thoughts turn toward our next transition taking place after the Thanksgiving break.
Every year on Veterans Day I am especially mindful of the sacrifices you have made on behalf of our country, but this year I am particularly struck by the selfless service of so many members of our military. Please know how honored I am to count you among our student veterans at UTSA.
