Carlos de la Garza

October 2, 2013//

Meet Carlos de la Garza. Carlos was recently accepted into one of the nation's most prestigious Latino leadership programs.

Interning in an elected leader's office is a unique experience that carries a lot of responsibility.

Carlos was accepted into the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 2013 Fall Congressional Internship Program. This fall, he is living in Washington D.C. to intern in the office of U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett of Congressional District 35.

Since he began the internship last month, the senior public administration major has dived right into the political realm at the national level. His dream is to become a legislator and one day run for office at the local, state or national level.

"This internship is helping me to grow professionally by leaps and bounds," said Carlos. "It's given me a better perspective of our nation's political system, and it's given me valuable work experience in the field of public policy."

Over the course of 12 weeks, Carlos's major duties will include responding to inquiries by constituents from District 35, drafting correspondence and memos, monitoring hearings and conducting research for use by Rep. Doggett's office.

This isn't the first time Carlos has interned in a political office though. Last semester, he was an intern in the office of Texas State Representative Mike Villareal.

"Interning in an elected leader's office is a unique experience that carries a lot of responsibility," said Carlos. "But it's very worth it for the deep knowledge of politics that you gain as a result, and for the opportunities it provides."

Carlos is the co-founder and treasurer of the Public Administration Student Organization. He is a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi professional fraternity. This past spring, he was nominated as the most outstanding undergraduate student in the UTSA College of Public Policy.
