About Us

Learning to read has great benefits to individuals and societies. Those who struggle with literacy face severe academic challenges throughout school that can lead to economic inequity later. In a globalized society where reading and writing guide soical equity, it is imperative that all children become literate.

To answer a dire need for reading materials, the Malawi Ministry of Education Science and Technology took a bold step to approve the Textbooks, Learning and Materials Program (TLMP) - popularly known as Read Malawi. The program places a greater emphasis on the development of early literacy in both national official languages (Chichewa and English).

At the heart of the program is the creation of books at each level that are culturally relevant and teach a variety of important lessons in line with the Malawian national curriculum. In the pilot with approximately 1,300 educational sites, more than 300 titles and 90 teachers' guides were created, leading to more than 5.2 million reading materials distributed so far. Book topics address important life skills and personal development issues, and include self-esteem, leadership abilities of girls, friendship, family life and traditions, farming and jobs, among many others.
