Follow-up to Ice Miller Report
I am writing to follow-up on the additional investigations conducted by our Equal Opportunity Services (EOS) office subsequent to the release of Ice Miller’s sexual assault allegations investigation report.
As you may recall from my message on April 4, 2019, the report referenced a number of general harassment and assault allegations, some of which named specific groups. EOS conducted a thorough review of all cases from the past seven academic years using all the data available to them through our historic systems. They identified any cases that tracked with the general allegations mentioned in the report, and a summary of their findings is now available for review.
As you will see in the summary, our data from 2011 to 2018 did not reveal any cases related to fraternities or “Tech/Cyber” departments. There were eight cases involving student athletes. FERPA prevents us from publicly releasing the dates or any personal information associated with these cases, but the outcomes are listed.
As noted in the summary, EOS found that proper procedures were followed in all identified cases, but that two cases could have benefitted from more thorough follow-up with the involved parties. Suzanne Patrick, Director of EOS and Title IX Coordinator, immediately reviewed these cases with the entire EOS team and has already made changes to improve their processes moving forward.
As important as it is that we own our responsibilities around preventing sexual violence at UTSA, it’s equally critical that we learn and grow from every experience to get better. We will be vigilant in our approach toward continually assessing our investigative procedures.
As I’ve mentioned in past messages, I know there are more sexual assaults happening on our campuses than are reported. Our zero-tolerance commitment will remain steadfast, as will our focus on prevention and culture change. My heartfelt thanks to all of you for supporting this important work.
