February Highlights

Black History Month at UTSA

UTSA will be recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Black Americans to our university, our city, our state, and our nation by hosting, sponsoring, coordinating, and/or facilitating informative, fun, and educational activities and events for the month of February. The theme for this year’s UTSA Celebration is “Honor the Past, Be the Present, Create the Future.” Visit the UTSA Black History Month Website for more details on some of our upcoming events:

Black History Month

Outstanding Black Student Leadership Award Applications Are Open - Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Black Student Leadership Award. This award, given during Black History Month, recognizes the outstanding leadership and contributions of a Black Student Leader to the UTSA community. Students can be nominated by faculty, staff, and students or a self-nomination. The nomination form will be open until Monday, February 14, and can be found on RowdyLink.

Spring Family Day on Saturday, March 5

Spend time making memories and sharing experiences with your Roadrunner. Join the Family Association for lunch at our Spring Family Day on Saturday, March 5 from 12:30 – 2:00 pm. Located in the Student Union Ski Lodge, this Spring Family Day will allow you to visit campus and have a chance to attend a basketball or baseball game.

Congratulations to the Parent Council Endowed Scholarship Recipients

The Parent Council Endowed Scholarship goes to deserving, current, full-time UTSA students with a family member who has joined the UTSA Family Association. The 2022 Parent Council Scholarship Recipients are Ethan Apawan and Christina Zhang. 

Ethan Apawan, from San Antonio, Texas, is a Sophomore majoring in Psychology. He is the President of the College of Science Dean’s Student Board. Ethan hopes to become a doctor to allow him to be a positive influence in the lives of so many others. 

Christina Zhang, from Atlanta, Georgia, is a Senior majoring in Computer Science. She is the President of the Student Art Society. Christina plans to attend graduate school in order to research machine perception.

Students can Get Involved in and around the Student Union

This February brings several opportunities for students to find out more about the departments, student organizations, and services housed inside the Student Union on the Main Campus. The following events are a part of our extended Spring Roadrunner Days calendar.

  • Kickback at the Union - Students can come enjoy free food, live DJ music, and a chance to get a t-shirt on Sunday, February 6. Students can also learn about all the services we offer including the Whataburger Resource Room, Study Rooms, the Roost Game Room, and more. Join in on the fun!
  • Sponsored Student Organizations (SSO) Open House – SSOs are created by a University department or division to support ongoing interests of the UTSA community and are highly involved in many campus traditions. On Monday, February 14, the SSOs will be hosting an Open House to learn more about SSOs and interact with student leaders.
  • Get Involved Fair – On Tuesday, February 15, over 100 organizations, non-profit partners, and various UTSA departments will be available to speak with students on getting involved on campus.
  • Multicultural Student Welcome & Dreamer Resource Center Anniversary – Students can meet some of UTSA's cultural and identity-based student organizations and celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the Dreamers Resource Center within the Multicultural Student Center for Equity and Justice on Tuesday, February 15.

LeaderU Challenge

The LeaderU Challenge on Friday, March 25 will focus on teambuilding, exercising students' leadership skills, and contributing to our campus environment through a service project. The day is facilitated by staff around campus and students are assigned to smaller groups to complete the leadership activities, followed by a reflection and large group dinner!

Emails to Students About Events and Services

In an effort to keep our Roadrunners informed, UTSA sends two regular emails to students throughout the semester. Campus Link is a weekly email sent to all currently enrolled students on Sundays. The Resident Report email is sent every other week on Wednesdays to all students living within UTSA Housing or Campus Living Villages. Both emails highlight events, opportunities for involvement, and services offered to students throughout the year. Encourage your students to check their email and learn about upcoming events!

Spring 2022 Career Expos

The University Career Center will be hosting two Career Expos this month. All students can sign up for group sessions to learn about career paths and jobs. Juniors and seniors should take advantage of the 10-minute, one-on-one sessions to speak with employers about internships and jobs. Encourage your student to RSVP for one of these career fairs through Handshake.

  • T.E.M. Career Expo - Wednesday, February 2 from 2:00 and 6:00 pm
  • All Majors Career Expo - Wednesday, February 9 from 2:00 and 6:00 pm

Support Groups Available for UTSA Students

Wellness 360 Counseling and the Collegiate Recovery Center are offering support groups this semester that are supportive, confidential, and tailored to meet student needs. Groups are a unique place where students can see they are not alone and together wellbeing is possible. Students do not have to deal with feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, or trauma by themselves. Sign-ups for a group happen through RowdyLink. The My SSP app is also available for students to access free, 24/7, real-time, single session support.

Is Your Student Interested in the Student Government Association?

UTSA Student Government Association (SGA) encourages students to be a candidate in the spring elections for the 2022-2023 student body president, vice president, treasurer, and all senator positions.

The purpose of the SGA is to serve as the primary voice and advocate for student interests at UTSA. Through initiatives, programs, meetings with external entities, and annual projects, the SGA promotes student wellbeing and success.

Students wanting to make a difference at UTSA are encouraged to learn more and submit a filing form on RowdyLink by the deadline on Monday, February 14 at 5:00 pm.

Fraternity|Sorority Life Membership Recruitment

UTSA Fraternity|Sorority Life chapters conduct membership recruitment in both the fall and spring semesters. Men can join chapters in the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and National Pan-Hellenic chapter through an informal recruitment structure during various times of the Spring Semester. Women can join chapters in the Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council through an informal recruitment structure during various times of the Spring Semester.

Recruitment and invitations into membership will be conducted by individual chapters so students should make sure to get to know them and follow the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council on social media.
