Sheri Hardison, CPA, Promoted to UTSA Associate Vice President for Financial Affairs

Sheri Hardison has been promoted to Associate Vice President for Financial Affairs and Controller. She is responsible for overseeing all areas of UTSA’s Office of Financial Affairs. The department provides sound financial management, reporting, and analysis to assure the proper stewardship of university resources. They partner with members of the entire campus community to offer financial services and business solutions, while continually looking for better ways to streamline processes.  

Sheri HardisonHardison served on the Data Governance Task Force and the search committee for new vice president for Business Affairs. She has worked with her team to implement many process changes and system improvements since the PeopleSoft conversion in 2014. She assisted Huron Consulting with data requests, which supported UTSA’s completion of the budget taskforce work.

 “Sheri’s sound skills in financial reporting, PeopleSoft, and planning made her the right person for this job,” said Vice President for Business Affairs Kathryn Funk-Baxter. “She is skilled at assessing situations and adapting quickly. She is adept at handling change, which is essential in a fast-growing environment like this one.” Sheri comfortably assumed the role of Interim AVP six months ago and proved her value as the highest-ranking leader in Financial Affairs. She is respected and liked by colleagues and staff throughout UTSA.  

Reporting to Hardison are the functions of Payroll, Disbursements and Travel Services, Procard Travel Card Administration, Accounting and Financial Reporting, Financial Information Systems, Training and Communication, Financial Services, Fiscal Services and Collections, and Inventory and Surplus. Financial Affairs consists of about 70 employees. 

“Financial Affairs has an amazing staff that keeps this university running behind the scenes,” said Hardison. “They bill and collect our revenue and interact daily with our students. They process payroll and travel reimbursements. They complete the accounting and financial reporting for a complex $1.3 billion entity and perform many other vital job functions. I’m pleased to continue working with this great team as we navigate, with excellence, whatever is beyond the horizon for UTSA and Business Affairs. We remain committed to looking for ways to improve our processes and create a better customer experience.”

The promotion announcement came during a busy time, with fiscal year-end and the introduction of a pilot telecommuting program for the department.  

Hardison came to UTSA in 2014 as Assistant Vice President, Financial Affairs and University Controller. She previously served as Associate VP of Finance and Assistant Treasurer for The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She climbed the ranks at professional services company PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP (PwC) for eight years. A member of the audit team at PwC, Hardison served in several roles, up to senior manager in their DC office until her departure in 2004

Hardison holds CPA licenses in Texas and Virginia. She earned her B.S. degree in Commerce, with an Accounting concentration and History minor, from the University of Virginia.

She has volunteered for the Audit Committee of the American Psychological Foundation since 2007 and as a risk management advisor to the Alpha Phi Sorority Chapter of St. Mary’s University since 2016.
