Katy Madden named interim associate vice president for People Excellence

Katy MaddenThe University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has named Katy Madden interim associate vice president for People Excellence. Already a driving force with People Excellence’s HR Business Partners and Talent Management teams since 2021, Madden brings more than 20 years of leadership and 17 years of human resources experience to her new position.

Madden will lead the People Excellence team, which is responsible for human resources operations at UTSA. She will oversee the areas of Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, HR Business Partners, Total Rewards and Operations Support.

“Katy’s extensive leadership background and her significant experience developing internal talent will be a valuable asset to the People Excellence team as we continue to pursue innovative excellence,” said Mary Hernandez, senior associate vice president for administration and operations. “I look forward to working closely with her as we continue to make UTSA an even greater place for our faculty and staff to work.”

Hernandez recently assumed the role of senior associate vice president as People Excellence joins Administration and Operations, one of six major areas within Business Affairs.

“I am excited to take on this role and ensure People Excellence provides the Roadrunner community with exceptional service,” said Madden. “I look forward to exploring opportunities to enhance our support, while contributing to our trajectory as a Tier One university.”

Madden joined Business Affairs in August 2021 as a Senior Manager on the HR Business Partners team. In April 2022, she took on the role of Executive Director of HR Business Partners and Talent Management.

When Madden was first hired at UTSA in 2021, she brought to the table over a decade of experience in human resources leadership and strategy for large teams. As a talent acquisition director at a Fortune 500 company, she led recruiting strategy for over 70,000 people annually in North America and overseas. Following a promotion to divisional vice president, she oversaw human resources strategy for over 60,000 employees across areas including corporate offices, store operations, distribution centers and overseas offices.

In addition to holding senior-level HR certifications, she has extensive experience developing training programs, managing talent acquisition teams and planning wide-ranging strategic initiatives.
