UTSA Public Safety is making a lasting impact on bike security and theft prevention on campus, with more students than ever registering their bicycles and taking advantage of free safety resources. Last semester, proactive outreach and expanded services helped reduce bike thefts by 50% while boosting bike registrations by 130%.

Public Safety continues to build on this momentum through the Stay Roadrunner Safe campaign, using campus events, social media outreach and a strong officer presence to educate students about bike security. The department partners with Campus Services to offer bike registration, which includes a free U-lock (while supplies last) and works with the Tito Bradshaw Bicycle Repair Shop to provide hands-on safety resources, basic maintenance and repair assistance during events.

“We want students to feel confident that their bikes are secure and are committed to giving students the tools and knowledge they need to protect their personal belongings,” said UTSA Police Chief Stephanie Schoenborn. “By increasing awareness and making security resources easily accessible, we’re seeing real results in preventing theft and protecting property.”

Public Safety continues to expand its efforts by hosting more outreach events near high-traffic bike racks and on-campus housing, making it easier for students to access security resources. Officers actively engage with students to promote free bicycle engraving, which helps identify and recover stolen bikes. The department also emphasizes their year-round bike storage service, giving students a secure option when they’re away from campus or not using their bikes.

With theft prevention as a top priority, Public Safety urges students to take advantage of these ongoing resources and adopt best practices for securing their bikes. By staying proactive and empowering students to take an active role in crime prevention efforts, the department is working to ensure a safer campus for all Roadrunners.
