Career Opportunities

The WRP is a recruitment and referral program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Diversity Management & Equal Opportunity (ODMEO) that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide through an interview process with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs. In 2011, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) highlighted the WRP as a model strategy in its guidance to federal agencies regarding the recruitment and hiring of people with disabilities in response to Executive Order 13548, Increasing Federal Employment of Individuals with Disabilities.

Each year at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Student Disability Services and the Career Center notify students registered in Student Disability Services about this annual program. Interested students will then be invited to attend a WRP information session facilitated by Career Center staff. By attending an information session, the student will have the opportunity to ask questions and will be introduced to the application process. Career Center personnel will provide resume critiquing and interview preparation and workshops at no cost to UTSA students who participate.

Interview slots may be reserved only by UTSA students and recent graduates. If the student completes the application process and interviews with the WRP recruiter, the student's information will then be added to a database. Hundreds of federal government agencies will have access to review the student's information in the database in order to consider the student for internships and job opportunities. The employers will then contact the students directly to set up an interview.
