STI Information and Testing

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are passed from one person to another through sexual activity (vaginal, oral, and anal sex). STIs are not exclusive to one group, relationship, or sexual activity. Routine STI testing is encouraged for anyone who is sexually active or interested in learning their health status.

FAQ

Using barrier contraceptive methods such as condoms, dental dams, and finger cots are the only way to protect yourself and another person during sexual activity. If using sex toys, ensure they are cleaned regularly and avoid sharing between yourself and another person during sex without protection. If using a sex toy on another person and yourself, put a condom on the toy, then dispose and replace the condom before using on a different person.

General recommendations for testing are to test at least once a year or test every 3 to 6 months if engaging in sexual activity with different people. However, STI testing recommendation can vary from person to person depending on factors such as age, sex, and lifestyle choices. We recommend speaking with a medical provider for personalized recommendations.

Annual Exams and Screening

Regardless of whether or not you are sexually active, annual reproductive health exams are important to track your health status and to screen for underlying health concerns.
